I told everyone that I plan to get Dad that map, but now I'm rethinking it. I think I'll go for the new Beatles biography. It's supposed to be pretty good and I don't think he knows about it, so he probably hasn't bought it for himself. Mom, do you know if he's bought it already?
damit jb, that's the book i was going to get him. i was 2 seconds away from buying it on saturday but then i thought i'd wait until i got o maryland to buy it so i didn't have to worry about packing it. I was excited about it because it's within my price range.
Just a heads up- I spent some time w/ dad last night and tried to get SOMETHING out of him, but he (like every year) insists that he doesn't want anything and that our PRESENCE is his present. But we all know each christmas he comments about how small his "pile" is compared to everyone else so here are my thoughts of what dad would want/need:
Clothes- it's the only time of the year he gets anything. Talkling the essentials- socks, pants, shirts.
Music- or anything to play in the car for his trips back and forth to Ohio. He JUST bought the Genesis box set and Latoya Jackson? (from american idol)
Okay, I got an idea for Dad and am willing to give up the Beatles biography to Carla: XM radio in his car. THAT way, he can listen to whatever he wants while making the epic Ohio-Maryland commute. 30 channels of commercial free radio! Here's the deal: you buy the radio and then a subscription ($13/month= $156/year). If someone wants to go in on this with us, we can split the total cost, which will probably be around $200 for a year's subscription. Any takers?
JB, that's an absolutely great idea! I'd be willing to pitch in if it's not too much. We can still manage to get him the beatles book. But the XM radio thing is genius! How much were you thinking? Maybe i could pitch in $50... doesn't that sound okay? too little? let me know...
Carla, I'm glad you're in. Anybody else want a piece? Carla, i think you can get a radio for the car for about that price--so why don't you start looking into that. Then Alex and I will take care of setting up the subscription; maybe I'll just get it for 6 months since this is pretty experimental (and otherwise pretty expensive). Check out XM Radio and Cirius (or is it Sirius)? Anyway, I'll have alex do some research too--he's good at that.
Okay, so here's the deal, I found an xm radio for dad, it's $50 but there's a deal that if you buy the home docking kit with it, you can get the docking kit for $20, saving $30, and he used to listen to the internet radio all the time in oberlin while on the computer, so maybe he'd get more use out of the xm radio if he had a home system too. BUT my budget will NOT let me get both, spending $50 on dad is kind of more than i was thinking, but it's worth it. So, if somebody else wants to go in with me on this part, maybe just putting in $20 for the docking system that would make this whole investment more worthwhile i think.
Nan, I need your advice. I wanted to get dad some fresh reading material (away from computational nuclear equations and theorems). I saw that Cynthia Lennon recently wrote a book about her marriage to John, why it didn't work, his addiction to LSD (her claim) with a forward written by Julian. do you think this is something he would read? hmm... I'm not quite sure. What do you think?
It's a good idea. I think that JB is getting him a the new Beatles biography, so I don't know if it'll be Beatles overkill. Is that even possible? Your call I guess...

hmm.. i've got nothing else. Mom?
Latoya London. Not Jackson.
I think the "in the car" stuff is a good idea. Maybe some comedy cds or something would be good.
Latoya Jackson...lol.

I'm going to get him more French-learning things (surprise!)- books/cds/whatever.

JB are you still getting him the beatles bio now that you got him the XM subscription?
Out of his list, I got him the shoes since I didn't think anybody else would and he realy needs them.
Mom- I deleted your last comment because you listed what you got for JB! Hope she didn't read it! You might want to "re-post" on under her name.
I bought dad Al Franken's new book, "The Truth," but on CD.. for the car trip to Ohio. Al is reading, it's supposed to be funny.
The Beatles Biography is up for grabs--I don't plan on buying it since we're doing the XM thing. Someone buy it!
nati's getting the beatles biography
I got dad nice running shoes (New Balance) to replace his 10 dollar Tommy Hillfiger shoes.
Mom, if he has new tenis shoes, please tell me ASAP.
The tennis shoes is a good idea. I was just thinking about that. No, he didn't get new ones. Are you kidding me?!
Munina,
Thank you for calling on me about the previous posting. You catch!!! I guess that the system is not perfect (and neither I am).
